Welcome to the online catalogues of the collections of Sir John Soane's Museum.

The museum is committed to making its collections available to the public by cataloguing them. Over the last few years this has been in the form of printed books. Lynda Fairbairn's Italian Renaissance Drawings was published in 1998; Jill Lever's Drawings of George Dance appeared in 2004, the same year that the Concise Catalogue of Drawings was put online on the Soane website. The year before Helen Dorey and Michael Peover's catalogue of the stained glass in the museum saw publication as the 2003 Journal of the British Society of Master Glass Painters. A catalogue by Helen Dorey of the furniture in the museum was published as Volume XLIV of The Journal of The Furniture History Society 2008.

In future we will be concentrating our efforts on publishing the catalogues of our collections online, here on our web site, to make the collections available as freely and widely as possible. We will take full advantage of the opportunities that online publishing can offer. Catalogue entries will be accompanied whenever possible by a digital image of the drawings or object. They will also be updated to take account of new discoveries and publications.

Catalogue entries will be published in tranches, as they are prepared. Already on the site are entries divided into the three main areas linked from the menu on the left.

This change to online cataloguing is a bold step for the Museum, but I think a timely, necessary - and - exciting one.

Much of this work is being made possible by generous grants from Mrs Gisela Gledhill, in memory of her late husband Richard Harris, and the Furthermore, Getty and Dunard Foundations. The Museum is grateful to all of them.
