The BP Portrait Award 2018

The BP Portrait Award, the most reputable portrait painting competition in the world, invites artists to submit their entries by 22 January 2018. Entry fees must also be paid by this deadline. The competition aims to present the very best in contemporary portrait painting and to encourage artists to focus upon and develop portraiture in their work. Everyone aged 18 and over (as of 1 January 2018) can enter and compete for the first prize of £30,000 plus a commission worth £5,000, to be agreed between the National Portrait Gallery and the artist. You can also win some of the remaining prizes from a total prize fund of £74,000.

The BP Portrait Award 2018 exhibition, an unmissable highlight of the annual art calendar, will take place at the National Portrait Gallery from 14 June to 23 September 2018. After that, the works will be exhibited two other locations. This year the exhibition celebrates its thirty-ninth year at the National Portrait Gallery and twenty-ninth year of sponsorship by BP.

If you decide to enter this prestigious competition, you will be eligible for one of the numerous attractive awards. Besides the first prize, there are also Second (£10,000) and Third Prize (£8,000), BP Young Artist Award: £7,000 and BP Travel Award 2016: £6,000.

All artists from around the world are eligible to enter the competition. You must be 30 years of age or under as of 1 January 2018 to compete for the BP Young Artist Award. You can make just one entry, with a work that has been completed after 1 January 2017. BP Travel award is open to International Artists aged 18 and over.

Last year’s winner was the English artist Benjamin Sullivan, with Breech!, a portrait of his wife nursing his baby daughter, with a weary but happy look on her face. Second prize went to the French artist Thomas Ehretsmann and the third prize went to the English artist Antony Williams.
